Jesus never lost in a debate, but a conversation with a Canaanite woman seemed He gave in. Add to that is the striking word "dog" that Jesus used to refer to the woman. Is it demeaning? This is the account of the persistent faith of a Syrophoenician woman who powerfully illustrates both the priority of Israel in salvation history and the full inclusion of the Gentiles in the blessings of that salvation.
