Profile of the First Christian Martyr
Scripture: Acts 6–7
In Acts, the issue for Luke is who contends for God’s truth and gives responsible teaching to the nation. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, is portrayed as calm in the midst of the charges, composed, and looking like an angel. He is an example of a mature Christian leader who is full of faith and wisdom, whose ministry is empowered by the Holy Spirit, and who is not intimidated by increasing opposition that eventually accuses him of blasphemy and drags him into court.
